Marlins' Pen maybe set ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

When camp opened a month ago, everyone thought that there were many jobs to be won in the Marlins' Bullpen. Looking back, that may have not been an accurate thought..

Coming in, we knew Sergio Romo and Drew Steckenrider would be closing candidates, along with lefty Adam Conley. Flame thrower Tayron Guerrero, looking to build off his first year in the Bigs, is out of options, which guarantees him a spot.. And Lefty Jarlin Garcia (who was also a starter last year) has really already proven he can be a valuable left hander in your Pen, as he’s done so over the last 2 years…

2 Front-runners, who have done nothing to hurt their stock this spring, will make the Marlins Bullpen...

  • Austin Brice (a former Marlin claimed off waivers by the Reds) is also out of options, which helps his cause (in order to be sent to the minors Brice would have to sneak through 29 Big League clubs via waivers, with nothing guaranteeing he’d be Marlin property through the process). He’s got good stuff. Power sinker, and a big sweeping breakingball that he has a great feel for.
  • Then there’s Riley Ferrell, a Rule 5 Pick from Houston who has to be on the Marlins roster the entire year or essentially go back to the Astros. The Fish had 2 Rule 5 Claims last year who spent the entire year with them in Elieser Hernandez & Brett Graves. You would think Ferrell will have ample opportunity, similar to Hernandez and Graves in '18, to stick in the‘Pen.

That was 7 spots penciled in for an 8-man-Bullpen. And the 8th man could very well be a lock, depending what the Marlins' plans are for Caleb Smith. We tend to forget, Smith was pitching like the Marlins best starter before his injury last June. An injury that swayed the Fish's decision to ease him into things this spring.. But if and when Smith starts the year in the pen. It will only be a matter of time before Caleb rejoins the rotation, especially if he continues to pitch the way he did this afternoon.

All this leads to an interesting concept that could be in the works for the Marlins in 2019. The Fish could be mixing and matching guys like Smith, Pablo Lopez, Trevor Richards, Sandy Alcantara, and Wei Yin Chen between starts and bullpen-duty throughout the year.

  1. They'd be able to limit and monitor some of the younger arms' work load this way.
  2. Possibly avoid tough matchups for someone like Chen, who was absolutely spectacular at home, and equally as dreadful on the road a season ago.

Who knows, maybe we see an opener or 2  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ 👌👌..
