Special

Image
The underdogs. The masked men in these Covid times. The balck jerseys with the black letters and numbers. The Team that lost 105 Games in 2019, and over 20 Players to Coronavirus less then 3 months ago. The "Bottom Feeders". The 2020 Marlins. Special. Playoffs?! For only the 3rd time in Franchise History, the Marlins made it to the Postseason.

Let's Go Fish!

Image
This Franchise has been hear before, needing to win 3 straight elimination Games in an October Series of '03. This Team, this year, has seemingly had their backs against the wall from the get go. Why should this moment, right now, be any different?! The Braves have taken the first 2 Games in their best of 5 Series against our Fish. The Marlins will have to win 3 in a row in order to take down Atlanta, but it starts today, now. 23 year old Josh Beckett stepped up 17 years ago in a very similar situation against the Cubs, tossing a Complete Game Shutout, after Chicago took a 3 Games to 1 lead. Can 22 year old Sixto Sanchez come up similarly big for the Fish today, against a very tough Braves Lineup? Here's a little known fact, Atlanta is out of Starting Pitching. There's a new twist to the Division Series in 2020, each Game of the Series will be played continuously. No off-days in between Games 2 & 4. We knew coming in Atlanta had Max Fried & Ian Anderson at the top o

Revamping the Revamped

The Marlins James Hoyt pitching for the Tobasco  🇲🇽   Olmecas in 2012. When the Fish went into Spring Training all the way back in February (Sheez does that feel like a long time ago or what), one of the main areas the Club talked about improving in was the performance out of their Bullpen according to Marlins President Michael Hill. “You look at our overall Bullpen performance”, speaking in regards to 2019, “it was not good,” said the Marlins Prez all the way back in December. According to Fangraphs, Florida’s -2.2 WAR (Wins Above Replacement) in their Bullpen ranked dead last in 2019, the only Team with a negative WAR out of the ‘Pen. Talks about ‘revamping’ ensued and soon happened. Gone heading into Spring were the Wei Yin Chen’s (and the 20 Million Dollars the Marlins decided to eat instead of sending him out to the mound). Gone were the Tayron Guerrero’s (and the 36 Walks he had in 46 In

17 Years

Enjoy it Marlins Fans ⚾⚾⚾! Cuz it's been a long time coming!! The Marlins play their first Playoff Game since October 25th 💍💍 2003, and they do it this afternoon in Wrigley Field against the Chicago Cubs.  Just as we said here at Son Los Marlins last week, before an absolute thrilling night took place in Yankee Stadium this past Friday, it won't be easy. Chicago has the experience. They've been in these Playoff dances 5 of the last 6 years, with a shiny World Series Ring in 2016 to prove it. A World Series which was captured by the Cubs for the 1st time since 1908 (with the Marlins having a little something to do with that lengthy time frame, more on '03 later 😉).  The Cubbies of today are loaded. They have a fearsome lineup with names like Anthony Rizzo, Javier Baez, Kris Bryant, and Kyle Shwarber. They have a legitimate back of the Bullpen with Jeremey Jeffress & Craig Kimbrel, and speaking of "legitimate", Chicago will also throw a 1-2 Punch out in

Una Mas

Una semana más. 1 more week, and the 2020 MLB Regular Season comes to an end. My Marlins control their own destiny. They sit in 2 nd Place (which guarantees you a spot in the Playoff Dance), but only hold a 1 Game lead on the Phillies for that position. Philadelphia themselves hold just a ½ Game lead for 1 of 2 Wild Card seeds, as that’s exactly what this final week is shaping up to be, Wild! All this while the Marlins have a chance at taking the entire National League East Division. That would mean the Fish would host the Wild Card Round (which consists of a 3 Game Series to start the Postseason) right here in Florida ☀ ️. The Marlins sit 3 Games behind the Atlanta Braves, who they happen to start a 4 Game Series with TONIGHT!   Miguel Rojas, whose 3 Run Homer in Philly was 1 of the biggest hits of the Season for the Marlins. Easy? Who said it would be easy?? Following the 4 Gamer in Atlanta, the Fish head to New York to play the Yankees coming off a 10 Game Winning Streak. But let

Here at Son Los Marlins we talked about 2003 when the Philadelphia Phillies came to Miami to play a September Series that had HUGE Playoff Implications for both Clubs, and similar to ’03, the Fish took it to the Phil’s in what was a Massive 7 Game Series that ended on Monday, one which saw Florida take 5 of those Ballgames. The Fish who came into the Series 1.5 Games behind Philadelphia, now lead the Phillies by 1.5, and are only 2.5 Games behind the Atlanta Braves for the entire Division lead. The Playoffs. You can almost “taste” those Playoffs, and there’s perhaps more reinforcements coming for the Marlins. The injury-bug has hurt key pieces like Francisco Cervelli, Eliesar Hernandez, and Harold Ramirez who were all transferred to the 60 Day I.L, pretty much ending their ‘Regular’ Season at least. However, guys like Jon Berti, Magnueris Sierra, and Stephen Tarpley have remained on the 10 Day I.L, as there seems to still be hope for their returns in the coming days. Berti & Sier

Crunch Time ⍩⃝

Twenty One. 21 Games to go in the 2020 Season and the Marlins are right smack dab in the middle of this Postseason Race! I got news for the rest of Baseball, this Team ain’t goin’ nowhere anytime soon either. Just take this last week as an example.  At .500 where the Fish when leaving Miami to start a tough 6 Game Roadtrip on Friday. All they had to do to kick off the Trip was play a 3 Game Series against the best Team in the American League, the Tampa Bay Rays, winners of 20 of their last 24 Games. Followed by another 3 Game Set against the dreaded Atlanta Braves, the defending Division Champs, in 1 st Place Again, in a Stadium (Truist Park that opened in 2017) where the Marlins had NEVER won a Series.  Yet those Marlins kicked off their final Homestand of the Season last night still at that .500 mark, after holding their own aginst the Rays, before FINALLY taking a Series from those damn Braves 🙂 ((who avoided a Sweep by trying to pile on to the scoreboard (going 1st to 3rd on a

The Player Pool

Image
Every MLB Team is required to have an “alternate site” in order to spread out each Club’s Player Pool, seeing as Covid spreads in large groups, and the Marlins know this too well 🙈. The Fish selected Jupiter Florida as a place not only to bring in Players with past Big League experience, like you see in Spring Training with NRI’s who could be used in case of Injury (Or Covid 🙈). They also brought most of their Top-Prospects to Jupiter, some who I’m sure nobody ever really thought would see action with the Marlins this year. Case in point, Trevor Rogers. Son Los Marlins wrote about Rogers in February, and how impressive he looked in a very small sample. But did anybody really expect to see what we saw last night?! “Pure Electricity” was coming out of Rogers' Left Arm. He has a feel for the Off-Speed, may have even gone to it a little too much, when you got a Fastball going like he did last night, #Whoa. We don’t know if Rogers' will get another chance to Start, but he just m

Future turning into Present

Sixto Sanchez, the real-deal. I couldn’t help but note a resemblance when Marlins Top Prospect Sixto Sanchez made his MLB Debut this Weekend in Washington. You heard all weekend of past Top-Prospect Pitching Debuts in Marlins History, from Jose Fernandez, to Josh Beckett. I didn’t go that far back. My first thought was of current Marlins All-Star Sandy Alcantara when I saw Sixto. That feeling of “this guy has Ace written all over him”. The funny thing is, Sixto is always mentioned in talks of what “will be” the future Marlins Rotation. Headed by Sanchez, followed by Prospects Edward Cabrera, Braxton Garrett, and Trevor Rogers. But what about the present, and the potential, oh the potential.  The very same Sandy Alcantara could join this Marlins Rotation as early as tomorrow, after his battle with Covid-19. A Rotation that was ravished by the illness and has since seen Pablo Lopez pitch like an Ace. A Rotation that has seen Eliesar Hernandez take a huge step forward, as we mentioned i

🙈

Son Los Marlins said it many times in the year 2019, extending Manager Don Mattingly to be at the helm of your Club, was not a good idea 🙈 . After the Marlins hot 7-1 start, many were quick to praise Mattingly for all the success.   The truth of the matter was, a lot of Players came in extremely hungry for the Opportunity the Marlins were providing, especially out of the Bullpen.  Many men were put in positions you normally would not see them in (Even with so many guys out), and finding ‘success’ at the Big League level. Now, would you call that good Managing? I guess it depends huh. Hall of Famer Pedro Martinez, who now is an analyst for TBS, once covered a Playoff Elimination Game for the L.A. Dodgers in 2015. The Manager of that Team, Don Mattingly. Pedro joked on air that it seemed Mattingly would put player’s names in a hat, juggle it around a little bit, then pick a name who would either come off the bench or out of the Bullpen 🙈 , based on his decision making. By the way, L.A.

Turning that corner

We’re seeing a different Eliesaer Hernandez in 2020. We’re seeing what the Marlins saw in a potential future for Hernandez when they selected him from the Houston Astros Organization in the Rule 5 Draft all the way back in December of 2017. At the time, Eliesar hadn’t pitched above A-Ball yet, but along with fellow Rule 5 Pick Brett Graves, they became the first Marlins since Dan Uggla to make it through a full Season on the Roster following the Draft. In order to be maintained in the Organization, a Rule-5 Pick must stay on your Big League Roster the entire year, and as expected, it did not come without growing pains. Hernandez won’t blow you away with velocity, or has the nastiest of breaking pitches, but he has extreme spin-rate. His 90 MPH Fastball gets on hitters extremely quick, and over the last couple Seasons he's begun to get a great feel for his Slider. Eliesar will show you that Slider as a ‘get me over’ pitch, or knock it off the plate to a Righthanded hitter ‘at will’.
