New Direction
Marlins C.E.O. Derek Jeter touched briefly yesterday on the future of manager Don Mattingly as skipper in Miami. Or did he? Jeet'z "There hasn't been a decision yet". "At the end of every year we evaluate all members of the organization, weather it's the manager, weather it's coaches" etcetera etcetera.
It's in that 'evaluation' process where it doesn't take a baseball genius to know Mattingly & Co. don't get it done. I know D.J also said "I think it's easy for fans and media to look at wins and losses and that's how you evaluate the job, but there's a lot of things that go into it". Maybe Derek wants us to forget just how ugly Mattingly’s record is as Marlins manager. Try 262-340 π heading into today's game. I know the Fish have been in rebuild mode the last 2 years, but they sure as hell were not in Don's first 2 seasons as skipper in Miami. Mattingly had the Marlins in Playoff contention throughout 2016, however the Club fell pretty hard during the final 2 months, ultimately finishing 79-82. 2017 was a year the Marlins couldn't get outah the gates until post All-Star break π, and then faded again in September. During both years the Organization spent quite a $$$bit$$$ on the Roster to not only keep players such as Giancarlo Stanton, Christian Yelich, Marcell Ozuna, Martin Prado, Dee Gordon intact. But to bring in Free-Agent's such Wei Yin Chen, Edinson Volquez, Brad Zeigler, Junichi Tazawa π. Mattingly’s Marlins didn't produce a winning season.
You hear a lot about "winning & championship culture" trying to be brought and taught here in South Florida. I can tell you right now, Don Mattingly at the helm of your Team will not provide it. Not to mention he's sounding like a man who knows his time is up in Miami with quotes like "I'm good either way" when it pertains to his future as Marlins manager. Don's a smart baseball man (You don't get the nickname "Donnie-Baseball" for nothing). But he simply doesn’t have what it takes to manage a winner. There's a reason the Dodgers didn't make it to back to back World Series' (and are probably headed for a third) until after Mattingly’s 5 years in L.A. were over. He's not a risk taker, and quite frankly the philosophy he and the majority of his coaches have had for his players this year are completely wrong. From Mel Stottlemyre Jr's handling of this young, yet very talented crop of pitchers (Which has an ERA of ?.?? since ?, ?? π¨). To the approach and mentality Donnie and his staff want a lot of thier young power hitters to have πππ.
The Marlins need a 'different' voice. With different ideas if they want to ultimately take that next step. They have to stop settling for mediocrity and begin to get their head on the ⚾. You begin to see a brighter picture in the minor leagues, as top and exiting prospects inch ever closer to the Major Leagues. There's πwavesπ of talent from Triple-A to Rookie ball. You can see how this thing turns around, and turns around quick in Miami. But they need a true leader to right the ship. I'll let Derek Jeter tell it like it is, "you don’t win any rings for having a great minor league system" ππ.
