.500

The Marlins return Home tonight to face the Cincinnati Reds after continuing to hold their own on the Road so far in 2023. The Fish, having taken the final 2 Games and the series in Arizona this week, secured a .500 Road Trip, and a .500 overall record again. In fact, the Marlins are a respectable 9-10 as a Visiting Club so far this year. To put that into perspective, in the 30 Seasons of Marlins baseball, only 3 Teams have finished at or above .500 on the Road ('04/2009 & the 2020 Playoff Club).

This all sets the Marlins up nicely heading into a Home Stand where a bit of news broke Wednesday regarding Friday's opener. Top Prospect Eury Perez will be on the Mound in Miami to make his MLB Debut. In a bit of a surprise move, the just turned 20 year old who stands all of 6 foot 8" and features an easy Hundo (100+ MPH Fastball), gets the 'May' call-up to the Big Leagues after dominating in Double-A Pensacola in the early going of 2023.

When thinking of previous Top-Prospect Marlin Debuts, May is usually not a month that comes to mind for such dates. From Max Meyer & J.J Bleday (July) a year ago, Edward Cabrera (August of '21), to current Marlins Ace Sandy Alcantara & Pablo Lopez (June of 2018). That's because as a low revenue Team, that extra year of Arbitration (Where it could be 4 Arbitration years as a Super 2 instead of the norm 3 for the Player) has to play a hand. A reality of the revenue stream as opposed to other Clubs that the Fish have dealt with for while (Miguel Cabrera's call-up in June of '03/Mike Stanton's debut in June of 2010).

The month of May Call to the Bigs for Perez alas Dontrelle Willis 20 years ago may be a bit of a surprise, but skipping Triple-A is something the Marlins have not been afraid to do with a Top-Prospect or 2 in the past.

Debuting at 20. Hard to top Miggy's Debut in 2003 though.

Charles Johnson, Josh Beckett, Willis, Cabrera, Scott Olsen, Josh Johnson, Hanley Ramirez, Dan Uggla (as a Rule 5 pick), Anibal Sanchez, Chris Volstad, Stanton, Marcell Ozuna, Christian Yelich, Sixto Sanchez, Trevor Rogers all appeared in the Majors without ever playing in Triple-A. Heck, Jose Fernandez skipped BOTH Double-A and Triple-A all together in 2013, in route to the Rookie of the Year Award alas Willis & Hanley!!

How long Eury Perez is up could depend on him, again similar to the D-Train in '03. Eury had some struggles facing Big League Hitters for the 1st time in the Spring, another reason why I thought they'd go the Triple-A route first. But there is absolutely no denying the Talent Perez posses, even evident in the little work we saw in Big League Camp during Spring Training.

Getting the call to the Big Leagues in May from Double-A. What else could Eury Perez & Dontrelle Willis have in common? 😎

The Fish tried the Opener route in Chicago with Bryan Hoeing (Who did a fine job) as a bulk guy. Hoeing remains in the Marlins Pen, a good move by the Fish, as Perez is not expected to go deep into Games, at least to start his Career. However, the boost Eury can provide the Marlins Rotation right now could be quite impactful, especially with the early Season injury to Trevor Rogers, the extreme control issues for Eddy Cabrera, and the complete 1st Half debacle of 2023 for Johnny Cueto.

Today is an exciting day for the Florida Marlins. It's Eury Day 🔥. Go Fish!
