Innings
It's a crazy time of year in Major League Baseball. The August 1st Trading Deadline is tomorrow at 6 P.M Eastern Time. There's lots of Contenders and pretenders trying to beef up their Rosters as much they can with dreams of October. The Marlins find themselves a half a game ahead for 1 of 3 National League Wild Card spots. The Fish have already made a move to buy this Deadline Season, acquiring Closer David Robertson from the New York Mets. Yes, the same Mets whose Payroll more (a lot more) than Triples 2023 Fish Salaries.
The Marlins have also been rumored to be looking for a Starting Pitcher (Who isn't 🙄) and Bats during this Trading Market. With the latter being a bit of a surprise at first glance, the Fish currently have Sandy Alcantara, Jesus Luzardo, Braxton Garrett, Edward Cabrera, and Johnny Cueto in their Rotation. But could the old "monitoring pitchers' workload" adage play a factor in Marlins decisions beyond just Eury Perez?
A lot was made over the Eury Perez decision by the Marlins to limit his Innings in the Minor Leagues, Perez whose appeared in 1 Game (2.1 Innings) since being sent down July 7th. That's because Eury, who just turned 20 years old, had a previous career high in Innings of only 78. I saw nothing wrong with the Marlins being cautious with their young Phenom, who has already tossed 86.2 Innings so far in 2023, so long the plan being he ramps up again and is ready for the stretch run AND October. What I didn't wanna see happen was for him to continue to throw for the Marlins, only to be shutdown before the Postseason, alas Stephen Strasburg over 10 years ago in Washington.
But Perez isn't the only young arm in the Marlins Rotation that's already exceeded or is closing in on his previous Career high of Innings Pitched by August the 1st. 25 Year Old Lefty Jesus Luzardo tossed his 125th Inning yesterday, his previous Professional High was 124.1 IP's in 2021. Fellow 25 Year Old Left Hander Braxton Garrett has tossed 106 Big League Innings so far this year, his Pro Career High is 125 Innings, accomplished last Season.
Obviously these 2 Lefties are gonna have to build up those Innings eventually, what better time than during a Playoff push right, but it is something to keep an eye on if you're the Marlins. Coupled with Luzardo having missed substantial time last year with a forearm strain and Edward Cabrera's Injury History. Cabrera has already spent time this year on the I.L with a Shoulder Impingement, after missing a good chunk of 2022 with Elbow Tendinitis, remember his MLB Debut didn't happen in 2020 due to Bicep Nerve Inflammation, and he was pulled from his last Start this past Tuesday due to Blister Issues.
Cabrera isn't the only Marlin whose battled the injury bug in his young Career either. Jazz Chisholm Jr. returned to the Marlins today to face Philadelphia after missing a month due to an Oblique Injury, and after playing just 5 Defensive Innings with 3 AB's for the Single-A Jupiter Hammerheads in a Rehab Game yesterday. This all coming after Jazz returned to the Club for just a week after suffering Turf Toe at the hands of the Centerfield wall in Miami.
It speaks to how important this Phillies Series is (Philly, who are the 1's that trailed the Marlins by that half-game coming into today's Standings), and to how important Jazz is to the Marlins Lineup. Jazz, who needs to find a way to stay on to the field for the Fish.
