As the Marlins completed their penultimate Road Trip of 2024, going 1-6 against two mediocre Teams of the National League in Pittsburgh & Washington, they'll now return Home to face the Club with the 2nd best record in all of Baseball in the L.A Dodgers starting tomorrow night. The Fish now stand at 55-95, a whopping 40 Games Under .500 with 12 Games remaining.
The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp still have a week to go on their 2024 Calendar, the last Marlins Minor League Affiliate with Game action remaining. Lefthander Dale Stanavich will get a Promotion for this final week from Double-A Pensacola, who played their final Contest of 2024 yesterday. Stanavich put up some solid numbers out of the Blue Wahoos Bullpen and was a part of the 2023 Jupiter Hammerheads Title run last year.
Speaking of the '23 Hammerheads, fellow Lefty in that Jupiter Bullpen Evan Taylor himself had a solid campaign. Racking up 52 Strikeouts in 44.1 Innings for High-A Beloit, to the tune of 2.84 ERA. Taylor was the Closer on that Champion Jupiter Squad and like Stanavich was a 2022 Draft Pick. A couple Lefties to continue to keep an eye on.
Shifting over now to a former Fish Farmhand, what a nice Series defensively Nasim Nuñez had against his former Organization this past weekend. Those wily Nationals were able to sneak Nuñez on their Roster all Season under very limited playing time. The 2023 Rule-5 Pick by the Nats from the Fish, made 3 consecutive appearances in the Starting Lineup over the weekend. Noteworthy, because Nuñez had only made 9 starts for Washington all Season prior to Friday. The Marlins lost all 3 of those Games and quite a gloveman last December.
Did somebody say gloves? It was also a very busy night in the Fight world on Saturday. Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez defeated Edgar Berlanga by Unanimous Decision. Canelo was able to drop Berlanga, who let's face it was never at that top level both prior or after the Fight, yet was ultimately unable to secure the finish. It speaks to, of course Canelo being as dangerous a counter puncher in Boxing as they come, but also the cinnamon one's inability to adjust in order to get his opponent out of there (yes I'm talking footwork).
One thing I will give Canelo credit for is not bowing down to Dana White & the UFC in giving up dates on the Fight calendar. White was adamant in pulling off Noche UFC at the Sphere this weekend, yet both the Co-Main and Main Event of the MMA card took place after the entire Boxing PPV at the T-Mobile was over. Coincidence? Maybe, seeing as every Fight on the Main Card in the UFC went the distance.
The visuals over at the Sphere in Las Vegas were stunning, however.
Hoy es 16 de Septiembre. Que Viva Mexico!
