What a big Win my Marlins pulled off Sunday in L.A. In the short term it equaled the amount of total Victories that the Club had accumulated during their last 10 Game Road Trip, with still a 3 Game Series in Philadelphia left on the to-do list during this current 3 city tour. The Marlins are 11-14 in the 25 Games since losing Star Outfielder Starling Marte on April 18th. The Team finds itself only 3 1/2 Games out of 1st Place in the tight N.L East, certainty hanging in despite the rash of Injuries that the Club had to endure just a couple weeks back. And yet if you were to dive into some of the things that continue to hold-back to an extent my Marlins off the field, you wouldn't be wrong to think things could still be better.
We'll start at the beginning, with the very good Baseball decisions made by the Derek Jeter led Ownership group here in Florida since buying the Club in the fall of 2017. The name of the game starts with Starting Pitching and the Marlins from the very beginning, after Ownership changed hands, sought out to accumulate as much 'Young Pitching with Upside' as it possibly could. Sandy Alcantara, Sixto Sanchez, Eliesar Hernandez and the list goes on.. Coupled with how well the Organization has developed Starters that were already in the System the likes of Trevor Rogers, Pablo Lopez, to Pitchers who were considered once upon a time 'non-Prospects' like Cody Poteet & Edward Cabrera. Pitchers the likes of these gentlemen have built the Foundation to what kind of Organization Derek Jeter said he was looking to "build from the ground up". The Starting Pitching within the Franchise has laid the frame work for something else Jeet's had said he wanted too, "Sustainablilty".
As much success as the Marlins under Jeter have had identifying Pitching, it's kind of gone in the other direction in identifying (up to now) Offensive weapons in the Prospect department who are able to perform at the Big League level, with the exception of Jazz Chisholm 😉 of course 🎷. That obviously has time to change, especially with how guys like Jesus Sanchez & Lewin Diaz are swinging it at Triple-A. Coupled with how the Marlins have hit with Big League Players like Jesus Aguilar and 🤔🤔🤔 well Jesus Aguilar 😉😉😉.
The Marlins have acquired weather through Trade or most recently the Draft, many Position Player Prospects. The majority do not posses much Minor League seasoning, the J.J. Bleday's, Conor Scott's, Griffin Conine's. The Fish will not hit with all of their young Talent, and that's ok. It's the stubbornness on giving guys like Isan Diaz opportunity after opportunity when they don't show consistent glimpses of performance in the Majors that leaves you scratching your head. It's ok that a particular Prospect or Trade did not work out, but don't continue to compound the problem by keeping these guys up in the Show. It's no secret your not helping anybody, especially the Big League Team that way.
Manager Don Mattingly continues to rest his best Players, quite often on the same day like he again did with Aguilar & Miguel Rojas on Sunday. Tell me how sitting a red-hot Aguilar gives your Team the best chance to win a night after being shutout in L.A? From letting a Pitcher like Braxton Garrett hit for himself in the 7th Inning down 4 on Saturday, to Pinch Hitting Sandy Leon leaving you without a Catcher on the Bench Sunday, I think reminds the fans in Los Angeles how bad Mattingly was/is at 🤔 you know, actually Managing 😉.
It took a truly poor performance by Corey Dickerson at the plate on Sunday to stop batting 3rd in the Marlins Lineup. It's what we've told you here at Son Los Marlins, there's a reason Dickerson has all of 8 RBI's, he's hitting now just a Buck-60 with RISP. He can't seem to cut his swing down no matter how much he chokes up on the bat. His arm is a liability in Left Field and his Salary is well over 7 Million Dollars (2nd highest on the Team). It would not hurt the Marlins to gauge Trade interest now in Dickerson (before it's to late). Who knows, maybe give 1 of those Prospects 😉 *cough *cough Jesus Sanchez a shot in the process. You won't miss much both at the Plate or in the Field, trust me.
We mentioned the Marlins are in Philly tonight to play a Phillies Team that the Fish have handled well the last 2 Seasons. The Marlins lost 105 Games in 2019, yet went 10-9 against Philadelphia. The Fish took 7 of 10 Contests a pandemic Season ago against these Phillies, including winning 5 of 7 in a massive Series down the stretch the last time these 2 Teams met. Remember, the Marlins had to stay a week in quarantine in the City of Brotherly Love their last Trip into town. Let's make it a shorter 1 this time, but's let's also keep it going fella's. #GoFish
