Lewin?!

As the Trade Deadline has come (This Friday), the Marlins will and should be looking to Trade many pieces away in hopes to grab solid returns on Players not part of the 2022 plan. But how should the Marlins go about identifying names which may include Starling Marte & Closer Yimi Garcia (Free Agents following the Season), to Adam Duvall (whose on a $2 Million Dollar Contract, owed $3 Million Dollars in October and/or could be retained in ’22 for $7 Million)?

Players who are impending Free Agents may/will not be the only ones shopped. 1st Basemen Jesus Aguilar (Leader in N.L in RBI’s), to Relievers Dylan Floro & Richard Bleier (Who have been solid in the Late Innings in Miami) all our Arbitration eligible next year. Relievers will be in hot commodity in the coming days in the cases of both Floro & Bleier; While the Marlins may feel they have a 1st Baseman or 1st BaseMEN to replace Aguilar next year. But do they?

Prospect Lewin Diaz was called up today, which could be a telling sign by the Marlins in regards to Aguilar’s future? Don Mattingly was instructed to tell the media it’s a way to get Aguilar off his feet and strictly DH the next 2 Games. The Marlins Manager was also quoted however as saying “We’re going to do what’s best for Lewin Diaz” in regards to Playing Time. It will be a very interesting decision for the Marlins as to what to do moving forward at the 1st Base Position. On one hand, yes, Lewin Diaz is an extremely talented Gloveman who has Pop from the Left Hand Side. He also has an extremely long swing that may or may not play in the Majors (He’s 8 for 56, a .143 Hitter in 25 Big League Games) and has also struggled in Triple-A (and in the High Minors in general, Offensively). This Season Diaz is Hitting .221 in Jacksonville and .197 in his 18 Triple-A Games since his last demotion on June 25th.

Our Marlins may feel they have a back-up plan at 1st if Lewin continues his Offensive struggles, in 1 Garrett Cooper. Cooper is as steady a Bat in the Marlins’ Lineup Card as there is. The only problem being you can’t write his name as often as you’d like in it. Health has been a major problem for Cooper throughout his now 4 year Marlin tenure. Can you count on Cooper (whose currently on th I.L again) playing, say 120 Games in 2022 (Something he’s only done twice in the Minors and never in the Majors)?

It will be hard for the Marlins to not only part ways with someone like Starling Marte without these next 2 months to at least have contract negotiation exclusivity, when there isn’t a clear Center Fielder who can even man the Position in the near Future (let alone anywhere near the caliber of Marte). But also with Jesus Aguilar, who may or may not have someone behind him in the Depth Chart and unlike Marte, CAN/maybe SHOULD be a Marlin in 2022. Either way our Fish have some interesting decisions ahead. Happy Trade Deadline everybody!
