Wild Night in Miami
The Marlins FINALLY Beat The Pirates
What is it about the Pirates when facing the Marlins? Whether it be PNC Park or more recently Marlins Park, why does it always seem the Bucs have the Fish's number?? This dominance isn't something new either.
Historically speaking PNC Park has been a house of horrors for the Fish. Some extremely Talented Florida Ballclubs Lost every Series played in the Steel City to some really bad Pirates Teams from 2002 through 2005 (Including the 2003 World Champion Marlins getting Swept right out of the Allegheny late that Season).
More recently the Venue hasn't mattered much. The Marlins dropped 5 consecutive Series, whether they were played in P.A or M.I.A, to what were all of a sudden very talented Bucs Clubs that at the time were led by Andrew McCutchen & Garett Cole from 2013 through 2015.
The current Fish haven't had much luck either against Jack Sparrow's favorite Team. The Marlins have not taken a Home Set (and won't again this year) against those Pirates since the 2016 Season.
I really felt the Marlins, fresh off finding a way to split a 4 Game Series in some packed houses in New York, while truly playing some good baseball all Road weekend Series long, would carry that momentum into the final Homestand of the First Half.
Instead the Fish fell flat on their faces during the first 2 and a half Games against these Pirates. The Marlins Offense mustered all of 3 Runs combined in Games 1 & 2 against the Bucs in Miami. While Game 3 was looking even worse Offensively for the Marlins.
The Pirates held the Home Club scoreless into the 8th Inning last night, preserving a 1-0 Lead. With 2 Out and absolutely nobody on, this Joey Wendle ⬇️Hit By Pitch snapped a run of 13 Florida Batters set down in a row by Pittsburgh Pitching.
That was simply the beginning of the wildness, as a walk, and yet another Hit Batsmen set up Avisail Garcia of all people to deliver in the clutch with a massive 2 Run Single in which Jesus Aguilar may or may not have been thrown out at Third?⬇️!
The Marlins wouldn't Challenge the play, while the Pirates would tie things up on a Michael Chavis RBI Double, after Tanner Scott didn't get this Strike 3 ⬇️Called.
300 pound Daniel Vogelbach would score from Second to even things up on a similar play that Jesus Sanchez could not score on in Queens this past Saturday. While Scott pitched out of a Second & Third with nobody out massive jam to not allow Pittsburg to take the lead after tying it in the 9th.
The Pirates would reclaim that Lead however following an Error by Brian Anderson in the 10th Inning (sound familiar), but were denied a third Run after Sanchez gunned down Former Marlin (and now Marlin killer) Jake Marisnick at the plate.
The Marlins were in business following a Miguel Rojas lead off Single in the Bottom of the 10th that put the placed runner Bryan De La Cruz on third and the tying run on 1st. It worked out well for Don Mattingly & the Marlins, who had Pinch Ran light hitting Billy Hamilton following the Wendle HBP in the 8th. Hamilton, who was due up, laid down a perfect Bunt that would have easily sacrificed Rojas over to Second, but what else? More wildness!
In the worst piece of baserunning I have seen in the history of Marlins Baseball, De La Cruz broke for home on the Hamilton Bunt and was tagged out out by Third Baseman Ke'Bryan Hayes. The play was solely to move Rojas (the tying Run) into scoring position, while De la Cruz literally gave the Pirates out number 1 in attempting to score a Run that meant absolutely nothing.
Rojas & Hamilton tried to pull off a Double Steal in an attempt to put said Runner into scoring position during Jon Berti's AB. Berti did 1 better by knocking a Base Hit the other way that scored Rojas and allowed Hamilton to scamper to Third representing the Tying Run. A Run he'd score on Aguilar's missile into Center Filed that allowed Berti (who was Running) to go to Third himself and Score on what else to end this wild night? A Wild Pitch!
