Last Week

1 week. 7 days.. 6 Exhibition Games and Spring Training 2021 officially comes to an end for the Marlins... A lot has transpired over the last few weeks. Guys like an Anthony Bender have come out of absolute nowhere and our willing themselves on to the Big League Roster 🔥 despite a very crowded Florida Bullpen. Meanwhile the Isan Diaz's of the world continue to show 🤔 well, absolutely nothing 🙈. 2 individuals heading in complete opposite directions as Spring comes to an end.

From a Son Los Marlins Blog a few weeks back.

We said it here at Son Los Marlins that the Fish would give Diaz the first crack at 2B and they still might come April 1st. It's also no secret 'SLM' identified a long time ago who the better Ballplayer was..

(From a 'SLM' back in September of 2019.)

..and Continues to be

Following the 2020 Postseason.

What's the "non-Prospect" Jon Berti done this Spring? Hit .353, go 4 outah 5 in Stolen Base attempts, hit a pair of Doubles, and get on Base at a .538 Clip. While our friend Isan is hitting .083, with 9 Strikeouts in 24 AB's, grounded into a pair of Double Plays, and has truly looked without an approach at the Plate.

We mentioned before how it would be hard to play Berti everyday if he's the only one who could backup Miguel Rojas at Short. That would not be the case in the event of a Jazz Chisholm making this Squad. Jazz, a natural Shortstop can (here goes that word again 😉) Platoon with Berti at Second, while backing up the middle infield as well, with the special Glove he posses. Not to mention the power he can bring from the Lefthanded Batter's Box (Chisholm has already popped 3 Dingers this Spring). Splitting the position with Berti would also ease the Bahamian, and one of the Marlins top-prospects, into the 2021 MLB Season.

The Fish's Bullpen situation could prove a tad more tricky. That's only after the emergences of arms like Bender's, Rule 5 Pickups Zach Pop, Paul Campbell, and a room full of established Relievers like James Hoyt. Pop & Campbell must be on the Marlins the entire year or be returned to their previous Clubs as part of the Rule 5 agreement. The Canadian Pop has an electric Fastball/Breaking-ball mix, while looking plenty Big League ready (despite not Pitching in 2 years because of Injury), as Campbell has more of a Starter's repertoire with a feel for all 4 pitches.

Speaking of "electric" with a "feel" for his "repertoire". I had the op to see Anthony Bender on Saturday. Bender hit 98 MPH on a couple of occasions while spotting his Fastball. That, to go along with an absolute wipeout Slider will make it extremely hard for the Marlins not to carry him on the Opening Day Roster despite him being on a Minor League Contract this Spring. A.B has a funky delivery that makes him hard to pick up for either Righty or Lefty Hitters, which he could be facing in the Big Leagues next week.
