Coulda/Woulda/Shoulda
Bit of a frustrating finale in San Francisco for the Marlins yesterday, as the rubber-match of the 3 Game Opening Series in the Bay went the Giants way.
There was some sparkling Defense from both sides on this Sunday afternoon. First from Jazz Chisholm Jr, who may have made the play of Opening Weekend in all of Major League Baseball at Second Base in the 1st Inning with a Superman like diving catch.
Giants Gold Glover Brendon Crawford stole a Run from the Marlins and an RBI from Garrett Cooper in the Second. Cooper would leave the contest after being struck in the forearm on Anthony DeSclafani's final pitch of the afternoon in the 5th Inning.
Jorge Soler robbed a Home Run from Darin Ruf in the 5th Inning as well. While Thairo Estrada would extract some revenge on Jazz with a beautiful stop of his own in the 6th.
The Marlins made a couple outs on the bases. Giants Right-Fielder Austin Slater threw behind Jesus Sanchez at 1st Base after a leadoff Single in the 3rd. While Avisail Garica was doubled-off 1st after an absolute smash by Joey Wendle. The Garcia play at 1st Base is hard to pin on 'Avi' based on velocity, as the Wendle ball had an Exit Velo of 96 MPH. The Double Play however ended the final rally for the Marlins, as the Giants Dominic Leon was nails in the 9th.
8th Inning Double Play
The Wendle DP in the 8th wasn't the only hard luck Out for the Marlins yesterday. Chisholm swung at a 3-0 Pitch in the 2nd Inning with Runners on the corners and nobody out that resulted in a Sac-Fly. The baseball off Jazz's bat had an exit velo of 106 MPH and looked destined to split the gap. San Francisco's Maurcio Dubon was positioned perfectly for Jazz however, as he was again in the 6th when Brain Anderson led off with a smash of 105 MPH off his bat, but right at the Giants Center Fielder.
Speaking of rough-luck, the Fish ran into some more in the Bottom of the 3rd when 1st Base Umpire Nick Mahrley signaled that the foot of Marlins 1st Basemen Cooper was off the bag after a bit of a wide throw from Trevor Rogers. It allowed the Giants' Slater, who was leading-off the Inning, to reach and later score the 3rd and final Run for San Fran, after Ruf's RBI Double followed. There was no video evidence that Coop's foot was on the Base, just as there was none that his foot was off.
Rough-luck did not play a factor in a pair of occasions in which the Marlins had a runner on 3rd with 1 Out and could not cash in (Peyton Henry K in the 2nd & Jesus Aguilar Double Play in the 7th). The Fish also went 0-7 with Runners in Scoring Position, while only mustering their 2 Runs off 11 Hits.
3 one-run Games in the Bay will be followed by a quick 2 Game Series that starts tonight for the Marlins in Anaheim.
The Angels, with Shohei Ohtani, Mike Trout, and Anthony Rendon are trying to right the ship after 6 consecutive losing Seasons despite their Offensive talents. Ohtani, obviously not only provides talent Offensively, the Japanese sensation was also the Halo's Opening Day Starting Pitcher, and despite having thrown on Thursday, will not take the Mound tomorrow. The Fish may get a small break there, as Los Angeles will go with their 5th & 6th Starters. Hey, after that Giants Series the Marlins will take any break they can get. Go Fish!
