It's like deja vu all over again
The New York Mets are up 1 Game in the Wild Card Standings, looking to secure a spot in the Postseason during this final weekend. All the Metropolitans gotta do, is go through the Marlins?! Yes, the Marlins. A Franchise who has been (not a thorn) but a full on dagger to the Mets, not once, Twice.
Need to remember there's a generation who might've been too young (as crazy as that may sound) and may not quite know what happened during back to back Season finale's of 2007/2008.
The '07 Mets still hold the distinction to the biggest Regular Season collapse in Baseball History. A 7 Game Lead with only 17 to go, attempting to capture consecutive Division Titles. While the 2007 Fish battled many Injuries (especially in the Rotation) and lost 91 Games, yet may have played their best baseball during the final week of the Season.
The Marlins Swept the Cubs in Miami, whom only needed a single Victory to clinch a Playoff berth of their own earlier that same September 2007 week. While the Cubbies eventually clinched *after leaving Florida. The clincher never happened for the '07 Mets.
The Marlins arrived to the Big Apple during the final Regular Season weekend of 2007 to face a Mets Team desperately trying to hold on to their N.L East lead. Jeremy Hermida hit a monster HR in the First Inning off Oliver Perez, as the Fish cruised to a Win during a Ballgame Started by Byung-hyun Kim. Game 2 witnessed an almost No-Hitter from John Maine and a benches clearing brawl, giving the Mets false hope of what was to come. As Game 3 was the final cherry on top to N.Y's collapse. Tom Glavine, making his final start as a member of the Mets, gave up 7 Runs in the First Inning, which was all she wrote. The Marlins knocked the Mets right out of the Postseason picture. That '07 Finale also marked the final Games as Marlins for Miguel Cabrera & Dontrelle Willis.
Fast foward one year, the Fish coming off a surprising contending Season in 2008 (yet no Playoffs) would find themselves in Queens once more, to close a Season against a Mets Squad yet again clinging to a Postseason spot. The Series was also a close to Shea Stadium, as the Mets were to move into their new home in 2009.
The '08 Series started just like the '07 one did, with a Marlins Win, this time behind Rookie Chris Volstad. With their backs against the wall, New York got an absolute Pitching Gem from Johan Santana in Game 2, whom outdueled Ricky Nolasco. Hanly Ramirez went down with shoulder discomfort during the Contest and did not play in the finale. The Shea Stadium finale, saw Scott Olsen make his final Start as a Marlin (a really good Start at that). The Game was all knotted up until the 8th Inning, when Wes Helms came off the bench and hit a pinch hit Homer to give the Fish the lead. Dan Uggla followed with a blast of his own to go back-to-back. Matt Lindstrom entered to pitch the Bottom of the 9th and got Ryan Church, representing the tying Run, to fly out to deep Center. Cameron Maybin camped under it, and the Marlins had knocked the New York Mets right out of any Postseason aspirations, AGAIN. The Mets faithful had to sit through a bunch of Shea closing *celebrations as somber as any celebrations you will ever see.
The Mets of today, will be trying to clinch a Wild Card during the first Season under a 15 Year $765 Million Dollar Juan Soto Contract. They'll face a Marlins Team whom were just eliminated from Postseason contention last night in Philadelphia, but one who will throw out Sandy Alcantra, Eury Perez and Edward Caberera.
What will we witness this weekend??
