All Time "Closing" it out


"All time" pinch hit leader Lenny Harris.



What better time than during a Pandemic to bring out the Marlins All Time Team. Here is my take on the legends of Florida baseball. No better way to "close" out the Roster than with it's Closers. 

Big Game Saves:
Robb Nenn & Ugueth Urbina


Both Robb Nen & Ugueth Urbina have a leg-up on the competition. Both gentlemen have the distinction of Closing out the most important Games for the Franchise. Nen not only is the Franchise Leader in Saves with 108 from 1993-97, he was also a perfect 4-4 in Save Chances during the 1997 Playoffs (Helping the Fish capture their first Title). Urbina was picked up for the 2nd half of the 2003 Season, becoming as close to automatic as you can be when taking the ball (He had a 1.41 ERA down the stretch). “Ugi” picked up 4 Saves during the ’03 Playoffs (Helping the Fish capture Title number 2).



Lights-Out Season's:

Bryan Harvey & Armando Benitez

Bryan Harvey & Armando Benitez each had an absolutely spectacular Season in a Marlins Uniform. For Harvey, his incredible year came in year number 1 of the Franchise. The man with 1 heck of a Fastaball and 1 heck of a Mustache Saved 45 Games during the Marlins Inaugural Campaign of 1993, earning a trip to the All-Star Game in a Year in which his ERA was 1.70. Benitez may have been ever so slightly better during his All-Star Season of 2004. Another man with a “lights-out” Fastball and a pretty cool goatee, Benitez saved 47 Games for the Defending Champs, to go along with a 1.29 ERA (Both Marlin Single Season Records).    



Longevity to the Finish-Line:

Antonio "El Pulpo" Alfonseca
 Steve "Sir Shrek" Cishek
 A.J. "The Mexicutioner" Ramos:
Antonio Alfonseca, Steve Cishek, and A.J. Ramos all experienced solid runs of success as Marlins Closers. Alfonseca is the only Marlin to ever win the Relief Man Award, which he did in 2000 when he led the League with 45 Saves. "El Pulpo", a 1997 World Champ with the Fish, ranks 2nd All Time in Team History with 102 Saves from '97-'01.. Cichek holds the Marlins Team Record for consecutive Saves with 33, a feat he pulled off from 2013-14. The Side-Armer ranks 3rd in the Organization with 94 Saves from 2011-15... Ramos is 1 of only 3 Marlins Relievers (Joining Harvey & Benitez) to make the All-Star Team, a feat he accomplished in 2016. The "Mexicutioner's" 92 Saves (From 2012-'17) are tied for 4th in the History of my Marlins.

  If the old baseball song 'Take me out the Ballgame' ever rung more veracious today for the Marlins, it'd have to be the part where it goes "If they don't win it's a Shame". Because I don't think there's a better word to describe the Fish right now, than shame. Shame that the Marlins stand here today with a record of 6-23, after just making the Playoffs last Season. Shame, that they blew a 7 to Nothing Lead to the Washington Nationals yesterday afternoon. Shame that the Marlins have yet to win a single Series in 2024. And what's probably the most shameful part into what's become the worst start of a Season in Marlins History, is what the Organization has done and probably will do in the near future to mitigate such a disaster. Can only get better from here?

  No way around it. The Marlins have started the Season as bad as it gets in the Win/Loss column. A straight O for 5 to commence 2024. Frustration was palpable inside the Marlins Dugout last night. A 4 Game Sweep at the hands of the Pittsburgh Pirates was followed by a 7-4 Loss to the Angels to commence a new Series and the month of April, all at Home. The Marlins lost a 3 Run Lead on Opening Day, a 5 Run Advantage on Sunday, and a 4-0 start to yesterday's Game. The Shutdown Inning from their Starters has been nonapparent each time the Fish have scored first, from Jesus Luzardo on Opening Day, to Trevor Rogers & Max Meyer having both been given big leads in the First Inning. Not to mention short Starts from A.J Puk & David Weathers.  The Marlins Offense is the one that does seem to shutdown after some early hot starts.   As much Roster turnover as say, the Marlins Lineup has had over the last few months, with the additions of Avisail Garcia, Jorge Soler, Jacob Stallings, and Joey Wendle. Not to mention the additions by subtractions of Lewis Brinson, Jorge Alfaro, and Isan Diaz. The Marlins Bullpen has pretty much stayed the same since the end of last year, and that may not necessarily be all that of a bad thing. With the volatile nature that is Relieving from 1 Season to the next at times in Major League Baseball, the Marlins decided to allocate more of their Payroll recourses in upgrading the Offense this Off-Season, true. But don't discredit the fact that the Club retained a couple of their most reliable Veteran Relievers either. Groundball machine Richard Bleier and the Marlins came to terms yesterday on a 2 Year Contract extension that'll cover the Ballclub's most reliable Lefty's final year of Arbitration, as well 1 Free-Agent year.
