Winter Marlins

Image
Maybe I was hoping for a Christmas Miracle of some kind. Maybe it was all the holiday cheer πŸŽ… and glee πŸŽ‹ that had me thinking wishfully. But the more we delve into this winter wonderland that is the Baseball ‘Hot Stove’ πŸ˜…, the more we see, or at least I do, it’s still the same hot, mucky, Marlins that can’t seem to get out of their own way. Don’t get me wrong, my Fish HAVE begun to move a little this offseason. But for crying out loud Derek Jeter, this is year number 3 under your ownership group!!! We now have to settle for “baby steps” after you and you’re Yankee buddies really did a number on the Major League ‘πŸŽ„ tree πŸŽ„'. I mean Roster πŸ˜‰. I really liked the Jesus Aguilar move. A 2018 All-Star coming off a down year, but someone who still has legit power, and was an RBI machine 1 year ago. A ballplayer that should be highly motivated to try and emulate what was a monster season with the Division Champ Brewers, especially when he’s in the midst of contract years. These

Bye Bye 'Berti'

Let's start with the good because in a 100+ loss season (In the words of the great Bart Simpson) all you can say is "Ay πŸ–• Caramba" πŸ™ˆπŸ™ˆπŸ™ˆ. For all the smoke and OPPORTUNITIES received by a few quote on quote "Prospect" position players in 2019, yeah that's you Lewis Brinson & Isan Diaz πŸ˜‰,  it's been guys like Jon Berti & Harold Ramirez who have impressed this year, and should be on this Roster in some capacity next season.  Both Berti and Ramirez signed as Minor League Free-Agents an off-season ago and have  proven to be plenty "Big League". Berti, a 29 year old Rookie getting his first true look in the Majors, can play the strongest positions of both the outfield and infield. He's hitting .275 with a .353 On Base Percentage (and doing something on those base paths). His 12 Stolen Bases lead the Team, and having scored 50 Runs puts him 5th on the Marlins in only 67 games.  Ramirez is a 25 year old Colombian who finally got the

Marlins C.E.O. Derek Jeter touched briefly yesterday on the future of manager Don Mattingly as skipper in Miami. Or did he? Jeet'z "There hasn't been a decision yet". "At the end of every year we evaluate all members of the organization, weather it's the manager, weather it's coaches" etcetera etcetera.  It's in that 'evaluation' process where it doesn't take a baseball genius to know Mattingly & Co. don't get it done. I know D.J also said "I think it's easy for fans and media to look at wins and losses and that's how you evaluate the job, but there's a lot of things that go into it". Maybe Derek wants us to forget just how ugly Mattingly’s record is as Marlins manager. Try 262-340 πŸ™ˆ heading into today's game. I know the Fish have been in rebuild mode the last 2 years, but they sure as hell were not in Don's first 2 seasons as skipper in Miami. Mattingly had the Marlins in Playoff conten

May 24, 2006. The Fish complete the sweep of the Chicago Cubs defeating Greg Maddux in front of 7,720 fans at Dolphins Stadium. It would mark the turnaround for a special season in South Florida. You’d be justified to think a team full of rookies would struggle, and struggle mightily at that, living in the everyday grind that is Major League Baseball. The extremely young 2006 Marlins got off to a horrid start. Worst start (Up until this year πŸ™ˆ) in Franchise History and on pace to be one of the worst in BASEBALL HISTORY! They were ‘walked-off’ 6 times through their first 24 Road Games, while at Home things weren’t much better. Attendance was in the πŸ’©-ter again (Not drawing over 15 thousand after Opening Day).. Not good for a Club with just as much off-field issues as on-field ones...  But like that corny phrase from ESPN’s 30 for 30 series, “What if I told you” this particular group of ‘miss-fits’, ‘youngsters’, ‘outcasts’, and above all else ‘Underdogs’ would shock the basebal

May 23, 2006. The Marlins walk-off the Chicago Cubs in the bottom of the 9th via a clutch hit from current LumberKings manager Mike Jacobs, as they commence to achieve a feat no other baseball team had/has ever done. Last time we blogged  πŸ˜‰  we were talking  πŸ”₯ ‘Fire Sales’ πŸ”₯  and how there may of not been one as massive as what occurred post 2005. The modern game had never seen as much Roster turnover between the end of one season and the start of the next. Even by Marlins standards  πŸ˜‰ . The 2005 Florida Marlins were built to be a Playoff Team. Their lineup featured the likes of All Stars Carlos Delgado, Miguel Cabrera, Paul Lo Duca, Mike Lowell, Luis Castillo. The Rotation was ‘All World’ like with Josh Beckett, Dontrelle Willis, A.J. Burnett, Al Leiter. The Club was a winner, but it missed out on Postseason play for the 2 nd  consecutive campaign. The Marlins were not only optimistic of reclaiming the Title at the beginning of the year, but also securing somethin

May 22, 2006. Almost 13 years to the date.. It’s a day that goes unnoticed in Marlins History, but one that began a turnaround for one of the greatest comebacks in modern day baseball... You want it? We got it! How many times have the Marlins held a quote on quote “Fire Sale”? Before you laugh at that question, think for a sec. No, I don't mean being sellers at the trading deadline. Or shedding off a player, or 2, or 3 πŸ™ˆπŸ™ˆπŸ™ˆ because their contract was getting a little ($) hefty... I mean a full blown 'FireπŸ”₯Sale' that turns a Team's Roster upside down ⬆⬇?!  True answer is 4.... Punk-ass Christian Yelich requested a trade from Miami which was granted in February of last year. The most recent of those 4 came under the Bruce Sherman/Derek Jeter Ownership group, when Giancarlo Stanton, Christian Yelich, Marcell Ozuna, and Dee Gordon were traded during the ownership’s first off-season at the helm.  This particular Fire Sale (which was labeled not a 're-
