What 'could' the '97 Marlins & '22 Fish have in common?!

Image
There's an old quote, yes even older than 1997 😉 , that goes "Winter never fails to turn to Spring". In Baseball however, 'Winter' doesn't always turn to 'Wins'. What do we mean?  How many times do we see a Team quote on quote win the Off-Season via major Signings or Trades, only to not have it translate to success on the field. Heck don't go that far, just look at this past Season in San Diego, where the Padres finished with a losing Record despite all their winter movement.  Even the Marlins have experienced this themselves back in 2012, finding out the hard way it isn't always solely the flashy moves that could turn out to be quite Major for a Big League Club. First thing's first, the 1997 Florida Marlins were definitely not shy in going the splashy Free Agent route in the winter of '96/'97, and to much success might we add 🏆. Signing to Free Agent Contracts the likes of Alex Fernandez (5 Years/$35 Million) who we've talked

Is it true? Can it really be?? No, nothing to do whether there will be a Lockout across MLB starting tomorrow or not, that was always going to be the case. What may or may not be more unreal, earth shattering, awe inspiring/incredible is the fact the Marlins may actually be making really good Baseball decisions for a change 🙂. Things didn't get off to the best of Off-Season starts for the Marlins. After failing to protect certain Prospects with 5 years Minor League service from the Rule 5 Draft, all while maintaining Players on the Roster who everyone knew wouldn't be on the Club at the end of the month. Coupled with reports circulating that the Marlins were in on Starling Marte (even offering 4 years, which was their bugaboo in June & July, but not Novemver❓), as the Centerfielder went on sign with the rival Mets. It wasn't until Sunday, the first of 3 straight days of major acquisitions by the Fish, that the Off-Season may have truly gotten started in Florida. Avisai

"And his name is Dan Uggla"

With so much 40 Man Roster and Rule 5 Draft talk this past weekend surrounding the Marlins. I thought it to be appropriate to bring up the greatest Rule 5 pickup in Club History, Dan Uggla.  Uggla couldn't find himself on the Diamondbacks' 40 Man Roster at the end of 2005 (saying something seeing as Arizona was in the midst of 3 consecutive losing Seasons), all while the Fish found themselves the beneficiaries of the D-Back's 40 Man Roster crunch (if you wanna call it that), selecting the Second Basemen from the Desert in that year's Rule 5 Draft. Throw in a complete Team demolition by the Marlins here, a Pokey Reese no-show in Spring Training there, and all of a sudden Dan Uggla is a National League All-Star in 2006.  Let's make this pretty clear, Son Los Marlins is not suggesting a Jefry Yan, or a Bryson Brigman, or even a Griffin Conine will be All-Stars in the year 2022, or even that they'll be selected in the upcoming Rule 5 Draft. But our Marlins, unwillin

40 Man (Pt. 2)

Yesterday we touched upon the Pitching side of things in regards to the Marlins 40 Man Roster. Today is the Position Players turn for us to speculate on who will still be on the Roster in the coming weeks and who will not in regards to Outrights.  We talked yesterday ( https://sonlosmarlins.blogspot.com/2021/09/40-man-pt-1.html?spref=tw ) about the need to clear some space on the 40 Man Roster for each Team at Season's end. Unlike on the Pitching side of the equation, there are 2 impending Free Agents on the Marlins when it pertains to the Position Player side. Joe Panik (who was just DFA'd as I'm writing this) said his goodbyes to the 2021 Season yesterday and possibly to the Big Leagues as well. Only Panik would know what he'd like to do in regards to 2022, while at the same time him or Sandy Leon (the other F.A on the Marlins), would have to make a Major League Team next year (weather it be here or not) on a Minor League Deal.  As far as Players being Outrighted earl

40 Man (Pt. 1)

With the 2021 Campaign coming down to it's final days for our Marlins, a lot of Player moves are forthcoming as it pertains to the 40 Man Roster mere days after Season's end. This is a traditional practice for all Clubs who aren't going to be part of Postseason play and even for some who will be playing deep into October. Shedding guys off the Roster who will not be part of Teams' plans moving forward, while at the same time scooping up Players that a Club values differently than others on Waivers, is something that goes unnoticed every Fall. Here at Son Los Marlins we will break up the 40 Man Roster in half's. Today we'll start on the Pitching side of things and what the Marlins may or may not think of it's Team moving into the Off-Season. Remember, someone like Sixto Sánchez who has been Injured virtually all year long, means the Marlins will have to add him again to the Active Roster at Season's end. Speaking of Injuries, in order to make space on th

HOW TO FIX THE MARLINS?

The Miami Herald had an article out yesterday ranking some of the most disappointing Seasons in Marlins history. The 2021 Season certainly made their list in what has certainly been a "disappointing" , 'frustrating', and many times just plain 'odd' year in regards to management of the Marlins Roster. This management, or better yet, mismanagement, of the Team's Transactions however, is not new to 2021.   This Fish Front Office made 'the' worst Trade in Franchise History months after being given the reigns to the Club back in 2017. A Trade the Marlins can not move on from   4 years and counting 👴  now. But just as the Front Office brass envisioned, Lewis Brinson starts in the Outfield and Hits right smack dab in the middle of the Team's Batting Order, every single day. What they probably didn't envision, is for Brinson to have a Career WAR of -3.3, Three Hundred and Thirty-Five Games into his Big League Career.  It's not like the guy he

The Jupiter Hammerheads, the Marlins A-Ball affiliate, hold a 2 Game lead in their East S.E Division with 3 to play. I had an opportunity yesterday to catch a very near 5 hour thriller in Port St. Lucie Florida between the Hammerheads & 2nd Place PSL Mets. A Ballgame that gave me ample opportunity to see Victor Mesa Jr's exiting style of play. To see 18 year old Shortstop Jose Salas continue his first Pro-Season. And to see an Undrafted Paul McIntosh continue to burst on to the Prospect scene.   The ball makes a different sound off Paul McIntosh's bat.  McIntosh, a multi-position baseball athlete out of West Virginia, went undrafted during this past summer's Baseball Amateur Draft. How and why are beyond me. McIntosh has legit raw power coming off his bat, a College approach at the plate, and can really fly. He spanked 4 hits last night (Including a Triple off the Right Center Field wall) and drove in 3. Paul McIntosh, a name to keep an eye on Marlins fans, for sure.

"Rocky Mountain esque" Marlins?!

Image
24-50. That is the 2021 Marlins Road Record with only a Road-Trip left on the Schedule. 38-34.. That equals the Club's Record in Little Havana heading into Friday night.. Almost a Colorado Rockies like disparity for these Marlins between Road & Home. You can see why Denver, which has always been known as a Hitter's Paradise, hosts such Home Field advantage for a Rockies Team this year (and always) whose 45-27 at Home, as opposed to 23-51 on the Road. Colorado is known for it's high altitude, humongous Outfield, and lower air density which allows the baseball to absolutely fly. But Miami?!   2014 marked the 1st of 6 non-Losing Seasons in Miami for the Home Team, despite the Marlins finishing all 6 Years with an overall losing mark. loanDepot Park too, has about as expanded an Outfield as there is in the League. But instead of being Hitter Friendly, Marlins Park is a Pitcher's Dream. Which begins to make sense for a Marlins Team that has really produced on the mound t

The Race to 13

Zurdos Trevor Rogers y Jesus Luzardo buscan terminar

  3. Not as in a Juanes song named Tres. Or the 3 Amigos movie with Steve Martin & Chevy Chase. 3, as in Lewis Brinson, Jorge Alfaro, and Isan Diaz. 3, as in the number of Organization's each Player has been a part of by the age of 25.  We'll start with our friend 'Issaaaaan' Diaz, who was a 2nd Round Draft Pick back in 2014 by the Arizona Diamondbacks. After only 1 full Professional Season in the Desert's Farm System, Diaz was part of the Jean Segura Trade that shipped them to Milwaukee for Chase Anderson & Aaron Hill prior to the 2016 Season.  Diaz was the Brewers' 2016 Minor League Player of the Year after popping 20 Homers in Wisconsin (the Mid-West League). That of course before struggling to the tune of a .222 Batting Average a year later in High-A (Carolina).  No worries, Isan was part of the now very infamous Christian Yelich Trade after 2017, though the struggles in Miami's System continued (a .232 Hitter in both Double-A & Triple-A in 2
