Payback's a Buc

Image
Oh how the turn tables. Same opponent, same time of the year, same venue. Different results. March 28, of 2024 saw the Marlins commence a new Season by facing the Pittsburgh Pirates for a 4 Game Series in Miami. The Buccos would pick up a come from behind Win on Opening Day in Extra Innings, and cap a 4 Game Road Sweep in the finale at the Fish's expense by erasing a 5-0 deficit.   March 27, of 2025 marked this year's Opener, and it was the Marlins whom trailed Paul Skenes & the Pirates 4-1 more than half way through the Contest, only to stage their own Opening Day Comeback with a dramatic Walk-Off in the bottom of the 9th. Following more 9th Inning drama in Game 2, the Fish would again pull out late inning comebacks on both Saturday and Sunday to take 3 out of 4 from the Bucs. We mentioned this Marlins Team played a lot better baseball in the 2nd Half of last Season. They definitely showed grit during what was a thrilling Opening Series in South Florida. Today, the Fish o...

EL OPENING DAY

Image
As the Marlins put the finishing touches on their 26 man Roster for tomorrow, there was another Opening Day eve Transaction for the Fish. Remember, last year Jon Berti was Traded to the Yankees, while Burch Smith was acquired from the Rays a day before the Opener. Today Peter Bendix & Staff acquired Tyler Phillips, a Right-Handed Pitcher from the Phillies. Phillips has put up some really rough numbers in the Minors for Philadelphia since 2021 (281 combined Innings), Pitching to a 5.15 ERA through all levels of MiLB. It's worth mentioning the New Jersey native missed all of 2022 with Shoulder surgery. Phillips did reach the Majors in 2024, appearing in 8 Games/7 Starts for the Phillies, however tallied a 6.87 ERA. The numbers continued to plummet this Spring, as Phillips had a 7.19 Grapefruit League ERA. Bendix & Co. must obviously see something in the analytics, as the former Phils' Prospect will claim an Opening Day Roster spot, in view of the fact  Phillips is out ...

The Marlins wrapped up Spring Training at Roger Dean in Jupiter and now head to Miami for 1 more Pre-Season Game tomorrow. All before officially kicking off the 2025 Season on Thursday against the Pirates. The official 26 man Roster has yet to be announced by the Club, though it's not hard to read between the lines a little bit. The Fish were unable to make it out of Spring without Injuries, as happens with many Teams. Left Hander Ryan Weathers, who had lost weight in the Off-Season, went down with a forearm strain, and looks like best case scenario will miss a very good chunk of the Season again. The heavier 2024 Weathers made only 16 Starts for the Marlins/yet was terrific when on the Mound, as he was again this Spring. Fellow talented Starter Edward Cabrera tallied all of 4.2 Innings in the Grapefruit League, due to ineffectiveness followed by blister issues. Cabrera as well will begin the Season on the I.L. However, the Right Hander should be back before the end of April. 2 of ...

Money well spent?!

It's no secret the Marlins are going into 2025 with the lowest payroll in Major League Baseball. That's been well publicized, following a 2023-2024 Off-Season during which they signed exactly 1 Free-Agent (Tim Anderson, 1 yr/$5 Million Dollars), along with just this past Winter where they soley Inked Cal Quantrill to a 1 Year/$3.5 Million Dollar Contract. We've hinted on the Fish Front Office shedding almost every Player whom is making (either now or in the near future ) more than the MLB minimum. We've also touched on ⬇️ reasoning ⤵️ behind the why that very well could be.   Former Cy Young Winner Sandy Alcántara is the leader on the Field and in Player Payroll heading into the new Season. After signing a 5 Year $56 Million Dollar Extension following the 2021 Campaign, Sandy has 3 Seasons of Club control left, with a Team Option for 2027. Alcántara is slated for a $17.3 Million Dollar salary in 2025. That's a jump of $8 Million Dollars from 2024 based on the s...

Can you believe that in less than a week's time Major League Baseball's Regular Season initiates with the same two Teams whom kicked off the Exhibition Season in Arizona. As is beginning to become customary if you will, the Los Angeles Dodgers begin their new Campaign in the land of the far east. Tokyo, Japan will be the setting for the Defending World Champions & the Chicago Cubs, a quick 2 Game Series which promises to thrill the Japanese fateful, seeing as Nippon stars will be out for both Squads. From Shota Imanaga & Seiya Suzuki, to Roki Sasaki, Yoshinobu Yamamoto and some guy named Shohei Ohtani. Camp has about 2 weeks left for the Marlins, whom open up on the 27th vs the Pittsburgh Pirates in South Florida again. Remember, it was the Pirates whom began the Fish's complete downward spiral to kickoff 2024, sweeping the Home Team in a 4 Game Series in Miami, and commencing their 100 Loss Season. How's about a little Jack Sparrow payback this m...

Spring's eternal

Image
The Marlins kicked off Spring Training last week with Pitchers & Catchers (more on the former in a second). The entire full Squad got things going "officially" Monday, though a substantial amount of Position Players were in Jupiter long before, chomping at the bit. Admittedly we began this post over the weekend prior to Owner Bruce Sherman & President Peter Bendix holding their recurrent specious media scrum to kick off the Spring. As has been the case with these sort of gatherings of Fish higher-ups of late, the terminology of being 'utterly oblivious' to the surroundings of the Ballclub, I think fits to a baseball tee.     It doesn't necessitate a  listen to all the 'analysts' on pods or read the many projections from so called 'insiders' to know the Marlins have or will be picked by almost everybody to finish dead last in their Division and probably the entire National League. That's something that's been brought upon themselves ...

Comienzo

'Marlins Media Day 2025' Sandy Alc...

Finally, some genuine good news to report regarding the Marlins. Over at the annual FanFest on Saturday, the Fish announced a Marlins Legends Hall of Fame. The inaugural first class will feature Mr. Marlin Jeff Conine, Luis 'Louey' Castillo, and Word Series Wining Managers Jim Leyland & Jack McKeon. Sincerely well done and long long overdue. We had a little fun over the weekend going in the opposite direction with regards to Marlins Legends. Sharing a list of some of the ' worst of the worst ' in Fish History. You know our Position Players, now let's delve into whom stunk it up on the mound. An antithesis Legends Hall of Fame if you will. Wei-Yin Chen The hands down Ace of the opposite Marlins Rotation is without question Wei-Yin Chen. You see, Signing a 5 Year Contract for $80 Million Dollars (the richest handed out by the Fish to a Pitcher EVER), only to win all of 13 Games to the tune of a of 5.10 ERA, will do that to ya. The Organization decided to pay Che...

Worst of the Worst

Image
A good amount of years ago we came up with our Son Los Marlins 'All-Time' Team . A few things have certainty changed since 2020, the Fish were in the Playoffs a couple times, Sandy Alcantara may or may not have (I mean, it's hard to take out any of those 5) sneaked into our 'All-Time' Rotation (we'll just call it a 6-man staff) following a Cy Young Award in 2022, Tanner Scott for the ' Pen ! But for the most part, I'd say that list would stay almost intact. Marlins X's John Rodriguez had a really  cool graphic last week, depicting his Marlins Diamond & Gold Teams, even including a Manager for both. Seeing as it's FanFest over at the Depot this weekend, where supposedly there will be ex "Alumni Announcements", thought we could have a little fun. Let's pull an episode out of Seinfeld titled "Biazzaro Jerry" and do an opposite list. Obviously talent won't have anything to do with it, as it's just for shits n gi...
