An outstanding debut for the newest Marlins Catcher Sandy Leon yesterday. Leon was given the chance behind the Plate after Jorge Alfaro was placed on the Injured List. Twice in as many Games, Don Mattingly yanked (no pun intended) a Miami Player from the Field who would later be placed on the I.L. On Sunday it was discovered Starling Marte had a fractured rib, an Injury he may have had for a while, but playing with it at an extremely high level. Marte was very hesitant, even adamant at times in wanting to stay in the Game. Starling "the Marlin" may have known an I.L stint was imminent and certainly did not want to lose a minimum of 10 days. Same with Alfaro, who clearly was limping in Atlanta after missing a few Games with Hamstring issues, and again wobbly on his feet after his massive Walk-Off hit against the Giants on Saturday. After beating out an Infield hit Tuesday against the Orioles, Mattingly also would not allow the red-hot Alfaro to continue. This openned an opportunity for the 32 year old Leon, a World Champion as a Backup Catcher (Who has seen Postseason playing-time) with the Red-Sox in 2018. As a matter of fact, Sandy Leon has been to the Playoffs 4 times, including last Season with Cleveland. Leon a Switch Hitter, signed a Minor League Contract with the Marlins in January. He had a solid Spring, hitting .333 with a .474 OPB, a pair of Doubles, and 5 Runs Driven In. Yesterday he picked up a pair of knocks in key moments from the Righthand side, scored the Game's first Run, and scorched a ball in his last AB from the Lefthanded Batter's Box. Leon has always been known as a Glove first Catcher and praised for his work behind the Dish. It showed in his Marlins debut, as he guided the young Trevor Rogers to his longest Big League Outing to date. The way in which Leon was setting up from the Baskstop Position caught my eye yesterday. The Marlins are in love with the 4-Seam Fastball up in the zone and/as we've seen Alfaro & Chad Wallach give extremely high targets when calling for that pitch. Leon was much more subtle when asking for the ball up, not giving away to early what the Marlins were trying to do, and possibly throwing opposing hitters off just a tad.   If the old baseball song 'Take me out the Ballgame' ever rung more veracious today for the Marlins, it'd have to be the part where it goes "If they don't win it's a Shame". Because I don't think there's a better word to describe the Fish right now, than shame. Shame that the Marlins stand here today with a record of 6-23, after just making the Playoffs last Season. Shame, that they blew a 7 to Nothing Lead to the Washington Nationals yesterday afternoon. Shame that the Marlins have yet to win a single Series in 2024. And what's probably the most shameful part into what's become the worst start of a Season in Marlins History, is what the Organization has done and probably will do in the near future to mitigate such a disaster. Can only get better from here?

  No way around it. The Marlins have started the Season as bad as it gets in the Win/Loss column. A straight O for 5 to commence 2024. Frustration was palpable inside the Marlins Dugout last night. A 4 Game Sweep at the hands of the Pittsburgh Pirates was followed by a 7-4 Loss to the Angels to commence a new Series and the month of April, all at Home. The Marlins lost a 3 Run Lead on Opening Day, a 5 Run Advantage on Sunday, and a 4-0 start to yesterday's Game. The Shutdown Inning from their Starters has been nonapparent each time the Fish have scored first, from Jesus Luzardo on Opening Day, to Trevor Rogers & Max Meyer having both been given big leads in the First Inning. Not to mention short Starts from A.J Puk & David Weathers.  The Marlins Offense is the one that does seem to shutdown after some early hot starts.   As much Roster turnover as say, the Marlins Lineup has had over the last few months, with the additions of Avisail Garcia, Jorge Soler, Jacob Stallings, and Joey Wendle. Not to mention the additions by subtractions of Lewis Brinson, Jorge Alfaro, and Isan Diaz. The Marlins Bullpen has pretty much stayed the same since the end of last year, and that may not necessarily be all that of a bad thing. With the volatile nature that is Relieving from 1 Season to the next at times in Major League Baseball, the Marlins decided to allocate more of their Payroll recourses in upgrading the Offense this Off-Season, true. But don't discredit the fact that the Club retained a couple of their most reliable Veteran Relievers either. Groundball machine Richard Bleier and the Marlins came to terms yesterday on a 2 Year Contract extension that'll cover the Ballclub's most reliable Lefty's final year of Arbitration, as well 1 Free-Agent year.
