Don't check the Standings until Memorial Day.
It's the final week of May. Memorial Day is this Monday and if you are a believer of that old Baseball adage, you should have avoided/avoid checking the Standings until then 😉. The Marlins currently find themselves 4 Games under .500 and come Monday will find themselves in Colorado, the final destination of a tough 3 City Road Trip.
The Marlins haven't won a Game in Denver since 2018. Getting swept in they're previous 2 Series in the Mile-High City in both 2021 & 2019. Tampa, where the Fish open up this 8 Game Trip tonight, hasn't been much kinder. The Marlins have lost 8 of they're last 9 Games in St. Pete and similarly to Colorado, have not taken a Series at the Trop in 4 Years. While Atlanta is the middle City of the Road Trip, and we'll just leave it at that.
The Marlins have not done themselves any favors prior to this Tough Stretch. They've had back to back losing Home Stands sandwiched over a 2-5 West Coast Road Trip. We mentioned the Fish finding themselves 4 Games under .500 already, a disastrous showing this time around in places that have felt like houses of horror of late to the Marlins, could easily begin to burry they're 2022 Season. For example, a 1-7 type record leaving Colorado would have the Fish 10 Games under .500 heading Home.
We recall the 2003 World Champion Marlins finding themselves 10 Games under the .500 marker on May 22nd of that Year. But this current Ownership group led by Bruce Sherman doesn't seem to hold the same level of accountability with employees such as Don Mattingly, whose been at the helm of the Managerial Position in Miami for the last 7 years, as the '03 Fish did with Jeff Torborg, replacing him with Jack McKeon and sparking a Championship Ball Club in the process.
The '22 Marlins will need Outings like Sandy Alcantara's on Sunday. A 115 Pitch Bulldog-like Performance to avoid a Sweep at Home to the rival Braves. They'll need gritty like showings the way Jazz Chisholm grinded through pain on Saturday to keep a Ballgame alive, and again on Sunday to score the Contest's 1st Run.
One can make an argument that the Front Office has been at times lackadaisical on the other side with the handling of Injuries/Illness on the Roster. It would have been nice to have Joey Wendle in Tampa tonight to bring a spark against his former Team. Wendle has looked Baseball ready for over a week now after a Hamstring Injury on May 11 in Arizona limited him for a total of, wait for it, 4 days. The Marlins Infielder will barely play in his 1st Rehab Game in Jupiter tonight, though Joey was eligible to come off the 10 Day I.L on Sunday. Same can be said for Jon Berti, who contracted Covid-19 in San Diego that wiped him out for 10 Days, but has been with the Marlins since last Tuesday, and is barely seeing Rehab Game action tonight. Berti's speed off the Bench has certainly been missed in previous Marlins Ballgames.
Regardless if it's Wendle & Berti or Erik Gonzalez & Joe Dunand on the Infield tonight, the Marlins desperately have to try and put some Road Wins on the board. That means guys continuing to step up like Jesus Aguilar, Garrett Cooper, Brian Anderson, Jorge Soler, and especially Avisail Garcia (A former Ray, who one imagines his Power could play Big in Colorado as well). It's also time to show accountability on someone like Jesus Sanchez, who a tough Trip at the Plate over these next 8 Games, should, key word 'should' spell a trip to Triple-A.
A tough Road Trip by the Marlins in general should, again key word 'should' also mean a lot of changes inside the Marlins. So let's just cautiously hope for some Dubs, because unfortunately 'accountability' is another key word not used much by this Marlins Ownership Group.
