"We're getting closer to that point"

Granted, that quote didn't have to do with Spring Training, but 'we are getting close' to camp opening for the Marlins in 2020. In a matter of days, as a matter of fact, a new wave of Marlins Talent we'll be on full display in Jupiter. A ton of the Org's top prospects received Invites to Big-League Spring Training this year, with the understanding that their time in the Show is nearing. And while that time may not be at the beginning of this season, and for a few of these ballplayers, may not come until 2021. This will serve as an opportunity for these individuals to showcase themselves at the highest level. The Ballclub's current & future success depends heavily on how this talent transfers to the bright lights.

"We're getting closer to that point where it's time for us to get competetive". "Get past that build-mode to where it's time to start winning some games". - Don Mattingly

Talent is in abundance through every level of the Minor League System these days. From a Sixto Sanchez, the Top Prospect in the Organization and 1 of the top pitching prospects in all of Baseball. To J.J. Bleday, last year's 1st overall pick by the Marlins and the 4th pick in the entire Draft. I can't remember the Marlins being this deep in their pipeline. The Edward Cabrera's. Braxton Garrett's. Trevor Rogers'. Conor Scott's. Jerrar Encarnacion's. 4 outah those 5 were already in the System before this new Ownership Group took over, though they always take full credit 😉. They have made some savvy moves of their own; Drafting Scott, acquiring Nick Neidart & Robert Dugger in the Dee Gordon trade, selecting Elieser Hernandez in the Rule 5 Draft. Now it's a matter of Developing and putting everyone in the best position to succeed when they come up. That's the part that scares me. Coupled with the fact the book is still out on how this Front Office evaluates talent. The Christian Yelich trade may go down to be the worst this Franchise has ever made (Saying something after the Miguel Cabrera trade in '07). Lewis Brinson turned into a complete bust, while Isan Diaz and especially Monte Harrison, have to make a lot of progress in 2020.. The price in trades to acquire Jazz Chisolm and Jesus Sanchez were steep to say the least on Ballplayers who have not performed to expectations at the highest levels of the Minor Leagues.. Other than that, Caleb Smith & Garrett Cooper looked at the time, and even more so now, as parting gifts from the Yankees to Derek Jeter. Turning into true steals for the Fish. While Sandy Alcantara (Acquired in the Marcell Ozuna trade), has become the Ace of your Rotation.

Roster administration has not been a strong point for this new Front Office. It showed again this week as the Marlins were forced to move off the Roster both Jarlin Garcia & Jose Quijada. 2 Left-Handed Arms who could of brought much value to a very weak (weaker now) Florida Bullpen. These were the latest casualty Relievers of many with High upside, NOT High salaries, and in some cases proven commodities (such as Garcia). Gone with nothing to show for. From a Tyler Kinley, to a Tayron Guerrero, Brian Moran, Garcia, Quiajada, and Austin Brice who was traded to Boston. For a Club putting premium on performance, Marlins Prez Michael Hill: "You look at the overall Bullpen performance last year, it was not good", Explain to me how a Stephen Tarpley (FORMER YANKEE), who had a 6.93 ERA in the Bigs last year, gets a Roster spot over Jarlin Garcia?! .. Hill: "As we've looked to build our Bullpen, we want guys who have above average stuff ,but also guys who can command the strike zone". Then how is it that Ryne Stanek (Who Walked 19 Men In 21 Innings) stays on the Roster over a Tyler Kinley (who had control issues of his own, but was far more effective)?! Is it because you gave up Nick Anderson (A Tremendous Reliver) in the Stanek trade 🙈🙉🙈?! ... Going back to it, you could have been able to keep the majority of these Relievers with better "Roster Management". Humberto Mejia, (Who the Fish really like) was too raw for someone to take in this year's Rule 5 Draft (has made all of 4 Starts @ High-A), and didn't need to be added to the 40-Man just yet. Alas a Jordan Halloway a year ago.. That being said, you didn't need a Sterling Sharp in this year's Rule 5 either, cuz for every Elieser Hernandez, there's a Brett Graves or worse, Riley Ferrel/Jullian Fernandez 🙊... Chad Wallach wasn't going to be claimed off waivers (had he'd been Designated), after hitting a combined .215 the last 2 years in an incredible 34 Games 🙈🙈. And honestly?! Why Is Lewis Brinson Still Here?! There's a lot of Talent here and way more coming for this Organization to have the "Sustained Success" they so desperatley claim they want. But if we can't get these little things right? Well, how's that old baseball quote go?
Happy Spring Training Everyone ⚾.
