EL OPENING DAY
As the Marlins put the finishing touches on their 26 man Roster for tomorrow, there was another Opening Day eve Transaction for the Fish. Remember, last year Jon Berti was Traded to the Yankees, while Burch Smith was acquired from the Rays a day before the Opener. Today Peter Bendix & Staff acquired Tyler Phillips, a Right-Handed Pitcher from the Phillies.
Phillips has put up some really rough numbers in the Minors for Philadelphia since 2021 (281 combined Innings), Pitching to a 5.15 ERA through all levels of MiLB. It's worth mentioning the New Jersey native missed all of 2022 with Shoulder surgery. Phillips did reach the Majors in 2024, appearing in 8 Games/7 Starts for the Phillies, however tallied a 6.87 ERA.
The numbers continued to plummet this Spring, as Phillips had a 7.19 Grapefruit League ERA. Bendix & Co. must obviously see something in the analytics, as the former Phils' Prospect will claim an Opening Day Roster spot, in view of the fact Phillips is out of Minor League Options.
The Roster casualty for the Marlins OD Roster you'd assume will be a fellow Righty (ended up being Seth Martinez againe), as it appears the former Starter Smith will commence 2025 out of the Bullpen. While pertaining to the Starting Rotation, compeer Connor Gillespie was officially announced the Fish's Game number 2 Starter on Friday. Gillespie made the Club after being Selected off Waivers from Atlanta, who claimed the former O's Draft pick from Cleveland earlier in the winter.
It's of note that if Gillespie gets another turn through the Rotation, it would be against the Mets, whom faced him twice this Spring. The ladder of those Outings saw New York score 6 Runs off 8 Hits during the Virginia native's 4.1 Innings Sunday in Port St. Lucie.
The Marlins will be looking to Win on Opening Day for the first time since 2020 (A Sandy Alcántara Dub) during the pandemic Season. The last time the Fish came out Victorious in front of a Season Opening crowd, you have to go all the way back to 2014, when Jose Fernandez defeated the Colorado Rockies. If it's any consolation, Dan Marino threw out the ceremonial first pitch that day as well 😉.
The Marlins beat the New York Yankees during their final tune-up before the Regular Season yesterday. Could 'scrappy' end up being a term that exemplifies this Squad? People may not realize that this Group went 30-37 from July the 14th through the 2024 finish line. While that marker may not jump off the page at you, consider the Fish were 32-63 going into the final Game prior to the '24 All-Star break.
Matt Mervis will be the reason for the championship this year.
